Located in the Alajuela province in La Fortuna area, Arenal is the volcano with more activity in the country. Its last important eruption came before 600 years of inactivity on July 29th 1968, there was a huge explosion causing the towns of Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacon to vanish from the face of the earth and to create 3 new craters. The towns were on the border of Arenal Mountain, not known by its inhabitants that they were sleeping next to a dormant volcano. Ever since the volcano has kept active spitting gases, rocks, water steam and hot lava, seen mainly during the night at the top of the crater. During the day the booms of small explosions can be heard, making it one of the most exciting volcanoes to visit.
n the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, in the Cartago province it is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica with 3.432 mts high. It has 5 craters that can be seen at short sight, the main crater has a beautiful green colored lagoon. The last significant eruption was in 1963 continuing its activity all throughout 1965, affecting the capital of San Jose with an ash cloud. Because of its short distance to the capital its one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica, it also offers the magnificent opportunity that on a clear day the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean can be seen from the summit, the Turrialba Volcano and parts of the city could also be seen.
