Poas Volcano

North of the Central valley in the Alajuela province we find this volcano of an altitude of 2.708 mts above sea level. it is one of the most spectacular volcanos in Costa Rica, mainly for its primary crater that has a warm and acid lagoon, turquoise colors and active fumaroles; it also has cold water lagoon, natural hiking paths and great biodiversity. Its last significant eruption occurred in 1994 spitting rocks around its crater; earlier in 1952 and 1954 had an important period of activity in which it was observed ash clouds, hot rocks and loud rumbles that formed the inner cone in the main crater of about 40 mts in height. Nowadays its activity consists in gas and water emissions. The Poas Volcano is one of the most visited volcanos in the region for its distinctive features and incredible beauty.

Arenal Volcano

Located in the Alajuela province in La Fortuna area, Arenal is the volcano with more activity in the country. Its last important eruption came before 600 years of inactivity on July 29th 1968, there was a huge explosion causing the towns of Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacon to vanish from the face of the earth and to create 3 new craters. The towns were on the border of Arenal Mountain, not known by its inhabitants that they were sleeping next to a dormant volcano. Ever since the volcano has kept active spitting gases, rocks, water steam and hot lava, seen mainly during the night at the top of the crater. During the day the booms of small explosions can be heard, making it one of the most exciting volcanoes to visit.

Irazu Volcano

n the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, in the Cartago province it is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica with 3.432 mts high. It has 5 craters that can be seen at short sight, the main crater has a beautiful green colored lagoon. The last significant eruption was in 1963 continuing its activity all throughout 1965, affecting the capital of San Jose with an ash cloud. Because of its short distance to the capital its one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica, it also offers the magnificent opportunity that on a clear day the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean can be seen from the summit, the Turrialba Volcano and parts of the city could also be seen.
