One of the great day trips from San Jose, Costa Rica, or better still, worthy of a longer trip on its own, is Monteverde and its famous Sky Walk. Included on our Vacation Package itinerary, Monteverde is something very special and an experience not to be missed.
Monteverde is a small community in the north of Costa Rica, about a four hour drive from San Jose. First established by Quakers from the US in the 1950s, it is home to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, which has been deemed one of Costa Rica’s “Seven Natural Wonders”. It is a location abundant in biodiversity and beauty. Woodlands exist alongside rainforests and remarkably tall trees are festooned with mosses, vines, ferns, bromeliads, and orchids. This is thanks to a variable climate and large changes in altitude over the area. Diverse animal life that calls this habitat home includes the jaguar, Baird’s tapir, ocelot, quetzal, and a cornucopia of birdlife.
There are various trails that can be walked in the Reserve, including Sendero Bosque Nuboso (Cloud Forest Trail), Sendero Pantanoso (Swamp Trail), Sendero El Río (River Trail), and more.
Monteverde Sky Walk is a major tourist attraction in the region. Operated by Costa Rica Sky Adventures, Sky Walk are the first hanging bridges in Costa Rica. These hanging suspension bridges take you along walking trails at the top of the rainforest canopy.
According to biologists, 90% of the rainforest organisms live at the top of the canopy – from unique flora including orchids and bromeliads to many insects and small animals; this is home to complex life you’ll otherwise not see.
The Monteverde Sky Walk tour lasts between two and three hours and groups are kept to ten people at most. Trails on the Sky Walk tour extend just over a mile and a half, and anyone in moderate shape can enjoy this tour. The climb is not muddy or strenuous, and the trails are flat and well maintained. Each tour is accompanied by a local naturalist guide, who will provide interesting information about the plants and animals in the area along the way.
There are a total of six suspension bridges on the tour, and the longest of these spans almost one thousand feet in length. The bridges span swamps and canyons. They are designed to create the least impact on the forest and are the ideal way to appreciate the local ecosystem.
