Irazu Volcano

Irazu Volcano, Lankester Gardens, Basilica de los Angeles and Ujarras ruins.

Early in the morning, between 7 a.m. and 8 am, you will be picked up at your hotel in San Jose or surroundings. From there we start driving east towards the Irazu Volcano, on the way up you can observe onion, lettuce, cauliflower and potato plantations as well as beautiful panoramic views of the capital.

Near the top we can appreciate the tundra like vegetation, small plants, trees and flowers but once at the summit everything has a moon like feeling as everything is covered in ash.

Coming down we will make a stop for lunch and then to the Basilica de los Angeles, the church where thousands of devote followers walk from all parts of the country to thank the Virgen de los Angeles for her miracles. A visit to the Ujarras ruins is mandatory, the ruins belong a to church of the XVII century later destroyed by an earthquake. 

The Irazu Volcano Tour finally takes you to the Lankester Botanical Gardens, here all kinds of plants and flowers of Costa Rica can be admired. We will head back to San Jose and dropped off at your hotel at about 6 p.m., just on time for you to get ready to enjoy the San Jose nightlife.

Irazu Volcano information

In the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, in the Cartago province it is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica with 3.432 mts high. It has 5 craters that can be seen at short sight, the main crater has a beautiful green colored lagoon. The last significant eruption was in 1963 continuing its activity all throughout 1965, affecting the capital of San Jose with an ash cloud. 

Because of its short distance to the capital its one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica, it also offers the magnificent opportunity that on a clear day the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean can be seen from the summit, the Turrialba Volcano and parts of the city could also be seen.
