When you’re considering day trips from San Jose Costa Rica, a trip to the beach is a must during your time in this Central American nation. Costa Rica has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, our beaches in Costa Rica are diverse, from palm tree-lined white sand beaches to black volcanic beaches; from tropical rainforest-surrounded coves to rugged beaches; from resort beaches to those that are off the beaten track, there’s something for everyone.
Some of the best beaches in Costa Rica include:
Tamarindo Beach – is among Costa Rica’s most popular. With great surf for beginners, it also has a dynamic nightlife. Between October and February, endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles nest nearby at Las Baulas National Park. This beach has it all but its bigger waves must be considered by swimmers.
Manuel Antonio Beach – part of Manuel Antonio National Park, this is widely considered to be one of the country’s best beaches. The beach is shielded by Punta Catedral, a rocky headland, and the water is calm and ideal for swimming with kids. It is accessed by a thirty-minute walk from the National Park’s entrance. The surrounding national park is rich in wildlife, and visitors may quite possibly see squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, sloths and iguanas. There are also other hiking trails here that lead to other hidden beaches.
Flamingo Beach – north of Playa Conchal, this family-friendly beach is a great place for beautiful sunsets, upscale living, great restaurants, sports fishing, sailing, scuba diving, and swimming.
Conchal Beach – Playa Conchal is a white sand beach north of Tamarindo and wraps around a perfect snorkeling and swimming bay. It is a little off the beaten track, making it a treasure that is unspoilt. With no surfers, it has few visitors and is perfect for a romantic beach outing.
Puerto Viejo – this dark volcanic sand beach is located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica – a hidden gem and great for swimming. So too on the Caribbean side is Tortuguero, which is home to attractions such as guided safaris, hiking trails, jungle canal tours in dugout canoes, and animals such as manatees, ocelots, tapirs, and green sea turtles. It’s also a great place to sunbathe on the beach. South of Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast is Punta Uva in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. There are two magnificent, calm golden sand beaches, coral reefs for snorkeling, palm trees, dense jungle, green macaws and monkeys.
Gulf of Papagayo – situated on the Pacific coast, the beaches of this region include Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco, Playa Nacascolo, and Playa Iguanita.
Dominical Beach – Playa Dominical is close to the Manuel Antonio National Park and is paradise for surfers. It is surrounded by mountainous jungle, usually has a lifeguard on duty, and is rarely crowded.
Ostional Beach – this volcanic black sand beach within a wildlife refuge is a great place to see sea turtles nesting between June and October. There are night tours to join to see this.
